Peru's Historical Treasures

machu picchu
    Machu Picchu

Peru is a mountainous country offering some of the most ruggedly beautiful vistas in all of South America. World renowned for the Inca Empire that ruled most of the country (along with most of Chile, Bolivia, and Ecuador) for many centuries prior to the Spanish conquest, Peru has a rich culture combined with many incredible natural and historical monuments.

Our first major destination after landing in Lima is Cusco, the former Incan capital. Today it is offically recognized as the historical capital of Peru and is home to the remains of Incan palaces and several temples, along with an impressive open-air market. It is located 11,000 feet above sea level - more than twice the altitude of Denver. We will then travel by train from Cusco through the Andes, a trip that offers relaxation in luxurious cabins while the stunning mountain scenery passes by outside. Machu Picchu, the iconic mountain estate of the Incan emperors and probably Peru's most well-known attraction, will await us at the end of the line.

Immediately outside of Cusco is the region known as the Sacred Valley. The valley's name is not exaggerated, as it was the main source of the Inca empire's mineral wealth and is still the best location to grow Maize (Spanish corn) in all of Peru. Nestled among the Sacred Valley's green fields are the salt mines of Maras, enormous white terraces twinkling with salt that has accumulated over centuries. The mines are truly spectacular to behold.

On the border with Bolivia is Lake Titcaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and home to the Uros people (pictured at top of page). The Uros live on a series of man-made islets that, along with their boats, are made entirely from the Totora plant. While many Uros live on the mainland now, several hundred still live on and maintain their traditional island homes. Perhaps not hard to believe, but you may find that walking across the islets feels similar to stepping on a water bed!

Cusco may be the historical capital, but the city of Puno describes itself as Peru's official "folklore capital" because of its colorful folklore and music. Visiting Puno near the end of our trip will be followed by traveling to the archaelogical site of Sillustani, the burial grounds of the Lords of Colla and one of the great Lake Kingdoms of the Altiplano. The above photograph is a shot of one of the interesting burial towers that you will see in this region. Breathtaking vistas of Umayo Lake can also be enjoyed from this same promontory.
