In late April 2011 Guatemala will celebrate Semana Santa, or Holy Week. Semana Santa takes place in Antigua and is a combination of Christian and Mayan traditions that serve to commemorate the last week during the life of Jesus Christ. For local Mayans the Resurrection is also symbolic of the 'rebirth' of maize crops for the new growing season. The processions during this week are truly impressive to behold, featuring stunning displays of Guatemalan color, floral arrangements and craftsmanship. Entire blankets of grasses and flowers are arranged in churches and decorate the streets of Antigua, effectively transforming the city into a solemnly transcendent version of its former self. The photographs below illustrate an example of the elaborate procession you will witness.

Antigua is the historical and cultural capital of Guatemala, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reason enough to visit it at any time, but during Semana Santa (Antigua hosts the largest Semana Santa celebration outside of Spain) the entire city becomes something else entirely...
 After witnessing Semana Santa, we adventure on to beautiful Lake Atitlan and the Mayan ruins of Tikal. Our Guatemala trip has always been unique in that it provides one of the most immersive cultural experiences of all of the Central and South American destinations we visit. We hope that you'll experience it with us next year.
Note: It is important to be aware that reservations during this time of year come at a premium, as do airline rates. Please, if you are interested, book as early as possible.
